Everybody Wins! Children's Literacy Program Expands in Phoenix, Arizona

I was recently honored to work on a media project with Rich Grief, the National Executive Director of Everybody Wins! USA children's literacy program that is based in Boston, and considered to be one of the finest children's literacy initiatives in the nation.

Its "Power Lunch" reading program started when a handful of dedicated volunteers began spending their lunch hour reading one-on-one with students at a nearby school in New York City.

The community-based effort has been expanded over the years to reach low-income elementary students in 16 states and Washington DC. For many years, Senator Ted Kennedy was a volunteer reader every Tuesday at an elementary school near his office on Capital Hill.

I was pleased to read today that the program will expand to reach more children in Phoenix, Arizona and other parts of the country thanks to a three-year, $250,000 grant from the University of Phoenix.

The grant will expand educational opportunities for low-income youth and create more literacy-related volunteer opportunities for University of Phoenix campuses by replicating the successful Everybody Wins! Power Lunch program to three cities where University of Phoenix has campuses, including Phoenix, Arizona.

"Several University of Phoenix campuses are already volunteering with our local affiliates and we look forward to creating more volunteer opportunities for University of Phoenix campuses around the country," Rich said.
